About this position

PhD opportunity in smart bio-derived composites for self-healing, sensing, and lifetime extension in net-zero material systems at Aston University within the Net2Zero Centre for Doctoral Training.

This project sits in the broader EPSRC/BBSRC CDT in Negative Emission Technologies for Net Zero, a partnership involving Aston University, the University of Nottingham, Queen’s University Belfast, and the University of Warwick. The research focuses on biochar, natural fibre composites, bio-based resins, structural health monitoring, self-healing materials, and lifecycle carbon benefits.

The aim is to engineer conductive biochar networks inside bio-derived composites so the material can detect internal damage through electrical-property changes and trigger thermally activated repair to restore mechanical performance. The project includes experimental materials development, laboratory testing, advanced material characterisation, and evaluation of carbon-storage and sustainability benefits.

Funding: fully funded four-year studentship with a UKRI-rate tax-free stipend (£21,805/year for 2026/27), paid tuition fees, and a research training support grant.

Eligibility: home fee status only; international applicants are not considered. Applicants should have a strong degree in science, engineering, materials, or another quantitative discipline, plus interest in sustainability, low-carbon technologies, advanced materials, and circular economy solutions. Experience with composites, polymers, sensing, electrical characterisation, thermal analysis, lifecycle assessment, or data analysis is desirable.

Application: submit the Expression of Interest via the online form. If shortlisted, you may meet the supervisors and later complete a formal application through the home institution.

Start date: January 2027. Programme length: 4 years.

Funding details

Fully funded four-year studentship with a tax-free stipend at the UKRI rate (£21,805 per year for 2026/27), paid tuition fees, and a generous research training support grant.

What's required

Applicants should have a first-class or strong upper second-class degree (or equivalent) in a science, engineering, materials, or other relevant quantitative science discipline. They should have a strong interest in sustainability, low-carbon technologies, advanced materials, and circular economy solutions, plus the ability to analyse complex problems and develop creative solutions. Strong experimental, analytical, or technical skills are required, along with good written and verbal communication skills and enthusiasm for learning new techniques and working across disciplinary boundaries. Desirable experience includes polymers, composites, sustainable materials manufacturing, electrical engineering, chemistry, physics, sensing techniques, material characterisation, experimental design, statistical analysis, lifecycle assessment, or basic programming/data analysis. Home fee status is required; international candidates are not eligible. English language evidence may be required if English is not the first language.

How to apply

Submit the Expression of Interest using the Apply Now form. Prepare personal details, passport or settled/pre-settled status evidence where relevant, academic transcripts and certificates, research background, and English language evidence if needed. Shortlisted candidates may meet potential supervisors, and successful applicants will later submit a formal application through the home institution.
