About this position

PhD opportunity in subatomic physics at Nantes Université, within SUBATECH UMR-CNRS 6457 and the Nuclear Structure and Energy (SEN) group. The project focuses on the measurement of radioactive properties of neutron-deficient isotopes relevant to medical physics, especially beta-decay studies for Positron Emission Tomography (PET) applications.

The work will use Total Absorption Gamma Spectroscopy (TAGS) with the newly developed hybrid STARS total absorption spectrometer. TAGS is used to reduce the Pandemonium effect and obtain accurate beta-decay strength distributions. This is important both for fundamental nuclear structure studies and for reliable dose calculations in diagnostic medical applications.

The PhD includes both data analysis and instrumentation development. You will contribute to GEANT4-based Monte Carlo simulations, detector geometry optimization, testing, and commissioning of the new spectrometer. The project also includes preparation for future experiments at GANIL, including the DESIR facility, and at the University of Jyväskylä.

The research is embedded in an active international collaboration that has previously conducted TAGS measurements in several countries and at facilities such as JYFL and RIKEN. The new STARS setup combines total absorption detectors with a fast LaBr3:Ce ring to improve timing and spectroscopic performance. The first measurement campaign is planned for July 2026.

This is a full-time PhD position in France, starting on 1 October 2026. The application deadline is 24 August 2026.
