About this position

INM - Leibniz Institute for New Materials (Saarbrücken, Germany) is recruiting a Doctoral Candidate (DC15) within the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network e-ChemIn: ElectroChemical Interfaces for energy conversion and storage. The project focuses on sustainable sodium-ion batteries, electrochemical interfaces, solid-liquid interfaces, solid-solid-liquid interfaces, and electrolyte design for energy storage.

The doctoral project aims to develop fluorine-lean and fluorine-free liquid electrolytes for Na-ion batteries, benchmark carbonate- and ether-based systems, and design safer alternatives based on NaBOB, low-toxicity solvents, and functional additives. A major part of the work is the rational engineering of interphases (SEI/CEI), formation protocols, ion transport, impedance growth, capacity retention, and interphase stability in selected anode/cathode combinations.

The selected candidate will work in an international, interdisciplinary network with academic and industrial partners across Europe. Secondments include 4 months at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden for NMR-based ion transport and interphase analysis, and 3 months at P&L Scientific AB, Sweden for robotic electrolyte formulation and high-throughput cell assembly/conditioning.

Eligibility: Master’s degree or equivalent in Materials Science, Electrochemistry, Chemistry, Applied Physics, or a closely related field. Applicants must not already hold a doctoral degree and must satisfy MSCA mobility rules (not having lived or worked in Germany for more than 12 months in the 36 months before recruitment). Strong English skills are required; German is helpful but not mandatory.

Funding: 36-month fully funded MSCA Doctoral Network position with living allowance, €710/month mobility allowance, and possible €660/month family allowance, plus social security coverage, training, networking, and career development support.
