About this position

Leibniz Institute for New Materials (INM), Saarbrücken, Germany, is recruiting a Doctoral Candidate (DC2) for the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network e-ChemIn: ElectroChemical Interfaces for energy conversion and storage. This is a PhD opening focused on the characterization of solid-liquid and solid-solid electrochemical interfaces operando at the nanoscale.

The project investigates ionic transport at electrode-electrolyte interfaces, with emphasis on composite materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) and zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs). The selected candidate will design and test microbattery closed-cell setups based on MEMS chip technology and perform operando characterization using probe-corrected STEM and related spectroscopy techniques, including EELS. The work also includes comparison with ex-situ TEM analysis and collaboration with other doctoral candidates in the network.

Supervision is led by Prof. Nadja Tarakina at INM, with co-supervision from Dr. Paolo Guisto (MPIKG) and secondments involving Dr. N. Krans (Protochips), Prof. M. Pumera (VSB Technical University of Ostrava), and Prof. Jiayin Yuan (Stockholm University). The candidate will spend 4 months at VSB Technical University of Ostrava, Czech Republic, and 3 months at Stockholm University, Sweden.

Eligibility requirements include a Master’s degree or equivalent in Materials Science, Electrochemistry, Chemistry, Applied Physics, or a closely related field. Applicants must not already hold a doctoral degree and must satisfy MSCA mobility rules (no more than 12 months in Germany during the 36 months before recruitment). Strong English skills are required; German is beneficial but not mandatory.

Funding is provided for 36 months under the MSCA Doctoral Network / Horizon Europe. The salary includes a living allowance (with country correction coefficient), a mobility allowance of €710/month, and, if applicable, a family allowance of €660/month. Additional benefits include social security coverage, training, networking, secondments, and a career development plan.
