About this position
PhD opportunity at the University of Southampton in sustainable transparent conducting materials.
This postgraduate research project sits in the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences and is based in the School of Chemistry & Chemical Engineering. The research aims to develop next-generation transparent conducting materials as sustainable alternatives to technologies that rely on scarce elements. The project combines materials chemistry, thin-film deposition, inorganic materials, and industrial scale-up.
You will work under the supervision of Professor Geoffrey Hyett and Professor Gill Reid, in partnership with NSG Pilkington. The project explores how composition, processing conditions, and targeted chemical modifications affect the electronic and optical properties of novel inorganic materials. You will investigate film transparency, conductivity, and charge-transport behaviour, and use advanced deposition and characterisation methods to identify promising compositions for transparent conductor applications.
A distinctive feature of the project is its strong industrial focus. Placements at NSG Pilkington's European Technology Centre are included as required, giving experience with industrial-scale coating technologies and the translation of laboratory methods toward commercial manufacturing.
Funding: competition funded. Degree: Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). Entry requirement: 2:1 honours degree. Deadline: 30 April 2027.
If you are interested in sustainable materials, thin films, and applied chemistry with industrial relevance, this project offers training in synthesis, characterisation, and process optimisation.
