About this position
PhD opportunity at the University of Groningen in the Systems, Control and Optimization Group, embedded in the Bernoulli Institute for Mathematics, Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence and the Faculty of Science and Engineering. The project is part of the ERC Starting Grant Energy-based learning of complex dynamical systems (E-BLOCS), led by Henk van Waarde.
This PhD focuses on systems and control theory, optimization, circuit theory, machine learning, and neuromorphic computing. The research aims to build mathematical foundations for energy-based learning in analog circuits and dissipative networks, including memristive and capacitive elements. The successful candidate will develop decentralized, local learning rules, prove convergence and scalability results, and test and validate new algorithms for training analog circuits directly from data.
The position is ideal for candidates with a strong background in mathematics, electrical engineering, or systems and control, and an interest in theoretical research. A Master’s degree in one of these areas or a closely related field is required. Excellent English communication skills are expected; familiarity with circuit theory, networked systems, machine learning, or neuromorphic computing is a plus.
Funding: full-time PhD employment with a gross monthly salary of €3,204–€4,051, plus holiday allowance and end-of-year bonus. The appointment starts with one year and may be extended for three more years, subject to progress. The PhD includes a training programme and enrollment in the Graduate School of Science and Engineering. Teaching duties are about 10% of working time.
How to apply: use the Apply now button on the vacancy page. Prepare a motivation letter, CV, BSc and MSc transcripts, contact details of two academic references, and an MSc thesis copy or representative publication if available.
