About this position
PhD opportunity in Technology and Society at Lund University
This doctoral position is part of REGULAIRE (Regulatory Learning for the Governance of Transformative Technologies), an MSCA doctoral network studying how regulation can learn and adapt when technologies, risks, and expectations change quickly. The project is hosted at LTH, Lund University, within the Department of Technology and Society and the research group led by Stefan Larsson, with a focus on social science-oriented, multidisciplinary work on AI governance.
The doctoral project examines regulatory flexibility, supervisory competence, and how authority is distributed among legislators, the Commission, standardisers, private actors, and supervisory authorities. The work will map supervisory competence, organisation, and tooling in selected jurisdictions using the AI Act as a comparative framework, combining document analysis, interviews, and process tracing. The project aims to assess how flexibility mechanisms affect predictability for firms, protection for citizens, and legal certainty.
Applicants should have a relevant background in law, socio-legal studies, political science, science and technology studies, or related social science/interdisciplinary fields. Strong English skills are required, along with the ability to work independently, formulate research questions, cooperate well, and approach the topic in a structured and persistent way. Experience with qualitative methods and knowledge of emerging technologies are considered advantageous.
The position is a full-time fixed-term doctoral employment. The selected candidate will receive a monthly salary according to the MSCA Grant Agreement. The employment also includes a three-month intersectoral secondment in another country, plus network-wide training, cohort activities, summer schools, seminars, dissemination, and practitioner engagement. Teaching and other departmental duties may be included up to 20% of working time.
Location: Lund, Sweden. Deadline: 8 November 2026. Start: 1 January 2027, or by agreement, no later than 1 June 2027.
How to apply: Submit an English application through the Varbi recruitment system with a CV, cover letter, degree/study certificates, and any additional supporting documents such as transcripts, references, or recommendation letters.
