About this position
PhD opening in terrestrial and cryo-hydrological gravimetry at the GFZ Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences in Potsdam, Germany, within the Department of Geodesy, Section 1.2 Global Geomonitoring and Gravity Field.
The project is part of the ERC Synergy Grant SnowShifts, focused on shifts in snow regimes in extreme environments and on improving understanding of snow volume, snow mass, and their dynamics in the Earth and climate system. The PhD researcher will work on high-resolution snow mass quantification using superconducting gravimetry at sites in high mountains and polar regions, and will contribute to the joint analysis of terrestrial and satellite gravimetry with project partners at the University of Oslo, BOKU Vienna, EPFL Lausanne, and CNRS CESBIO Toulouse.
Research topics and methods include temporal gravity field variations, superconducting gravimeter time series, snow water equivalent estimation, time series analysis, statistics, and programming/toolbox development in Python, MATLAB, or FORTRAN. The role also involves interdisciplinary collaboration with cryospheric science and remote sensing teams, scientific writing, conference presentations, and preparation of a PhD thesis.
Eligibility highlights: a completed master's degree, diploma, or equivalent in Geodesy, Geophysics, Geosciences, Physics, or a related field; knowledge of gravity field observations from space and from the Earth's surface; strong communication skills; very good English; and willingness to do fieldwork in high-alpine and polar regions. German is desirable but not required.
Funding and conditions: fixed-term appointment for 3 years, 75% part-time, salary according to TVöD Bund group 13. The post is based in Potsdam. Application deadline: 4 December 2026.
Apply online only and submit a CV, motivation letter, and grades/certificates; references are optional if available.
