About this position
Australian National University (ANU) is advertising a Postdoctoral / Research Fellow position in the Research School of Earth Sciences in Canberra, Australia. The project sits in observational seismology and solid earth geophysics, with a focus on passive-seismic imaging of upper mantle structure beneath the WA-Array. The research will use anisotropic receiver functions and S-wave receiver functions to investigate upper mantle discontinuities such as the Lithosphere-Asthenosphere Boundary.
The role is suited to an early-career researcher with a PhD in observational seismology or a related area, or someone expecting to complete the PhD within six months of appointment. Helpful experience includes processing and analysing passive-seismic data, programming in Python or MATLAB, imaging or probing the Earth’s upper mantle, and working with large continental-scale datasets.
The appointment is full-time and continuing (contingent funded). The salary package is $91,546 - $141,317 per annum plus 17% superannuation, and the project funding is expected to run until 30 June 2030.
To apply, candidates must submit a two-page statement addressing the selection criteria, a current CV including at least three referees, and any other required documents through the ANU application process. The closing date is 15 November 2026 at 23:55 AEDT. For enquiries, the contact listed is Dr Caroline Eakin ([email protected]).

Relevant experience in requesting, processing, and analysing passive-seismic data is advantageous, as are programming skills in Python or MATLAB, methods for imaging or probing the Earth’s upper mantle using receiver functions, and prior experience working with large datasets from continental-scale arrays. A summary addressing selection criteria and a CV with at least three referees are required.
How to apply
Apply on the ANU website and upload a two-page suitability statement, a current CV including at least three referees, and any other required documents. Ensure your application addresses the selection criteria. Contact Dr Caroline Eakin for role enquiries if needed.
