About this position

Wageningen University & Research is advertising a fully funded PhD position on the link between mountains, downstream agriculture, and ecosystems globally. The project, MountAInWater, focuses on how mountain processes shape the global hydrological cycle, how snow and ice melt sustain downstream water supply, and how climate change may alter water availability for agriculture and ecosystems.

The PhD student will work within the chair group Water Systems and Global Change and will use large-scale hydrology-crop modelling, mountain hydrology outputs, and global mountain reanalysis datasets to study river basins originating in snow- and ice-covered mountains. Research tasks include assessing the impact of missing mountain processes in global precipitation and hydrological models, quantifying mountain water contributions to agriculture and environmental flows, and analysing hotspot basins with high irrigation demand and meltwater flows.

Eligibility highlights include an MSc in Hydrology, Crop Science, Earth System Science, Environmental Science, Climate Science, or a related field; an MSc thesis related to quantitative assessment of water and/or food security; experience with large datasets and numerical modelling; programming skills in R, Python, or Matlab; and a strong command of English (C1 level expected). Experience with HPC-based modelling is preferred.

Funding is fully covered. The position offers a gross monthly salary from €3,204 in year 1 to €4,051 in year 4, plus a tailored course programme and a temporary contract of 18 months, extendable if performance is good.

Applications must be submitted via the WUR vacancy page. Applicants should upload a CV and motivation letter only (maximum 3 pages total) and complete the mandatory online form. The deadline is 26 October 2026.
