About this position

PhD opportunity at the University of St Andrews in the School of Psychology and Neuroscience: EASTBIO The role of eye position signals in spatial attention.

This project sits at the intersection of neuroscience, psychology, and brain imaging, and investigates how the brain combines two eye-position signals—oculoproprioception and corollary discharge—to support spatial attention. The research uses repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), behavioural tasks, and functional neuroimaging including arterial spin labelling (ASL) MRI.

The project aims to: (1) determine how eye-position signals are weighted for spatial attention by selectively perturbing somatosensory cortex or frontal eye field with rTMS; and (2) identify the neural networks through which these signals influence attention, including downstream parietal attention networks. The work has potential clinical relevance for understanding and eventually improving rehabilitation for spatial neglect after stroke.

Supervision is provided by Dr Daniela Balslev and Dr Jennifer Macfarlane. The student will join an interdisciplinary environment with access to the necessary equipment from the start, and will benefit from wider research communities including St Andrews Vision Labs and the SINAPSE imaging network.

Funding: This is a 4-year fully funded PhD competition project under the EASTBIO BBSRC Doctoral Training Partnership. It provides a stipend at the UKRI standard rate and covers UK tuition fees; the university covers the Home-International fee difference.
