About this position

PhD opportunity in developing brain imaging at Cardiff University

This funded PhD project, Mapping the Developing Brain: Linking Structure and Function through Imaging, is based at Cardiff University within the Cardiff School of Psychology and is supervised by Prof Mara Cercignani and Dr Marco Palombo. The research uses data from 300 children and combines multiple neuroimaging and behavioural methods, including MRI, EEG, and fNIRS, to study how brain structure and activity work together as skills emerge. A key emphasis is modelling brain microstructure with MRI and linking it to neurophysiological measures of function. The work is strongly oriented toward developmental neuroscience, psychology, and child brain imaging, with potential relevance for early intervention and school readiness.

This PhD is part of the GW4 BioMed3 Doctoral Landscape Programme, which offers up to 18 MRC-funded studentships across biomedical themes including Neuroscience and Mental Health. The programme is a collaboration between the Universities of Bath, Bristol, Cardiff (lead), and Exeter.

Funding is available for four years full time and includes UK tuition fees, a UKRI-rate doctoral stipend (£21,805 p.a. for 2026/27, updated annually), and up to £5,000 per year for research training and support. International applicants are eligible, and the partners cover the difference between home and international tuition fees; however, visa, healthcare surcharge, and relocation costs are not covered.

Eligibility is open to UK and international applicants. Applicants should normally hold, or be about to obtain, a first or upper second-class honours degree in an appropriate area such as medical sciences, computing, mathematics, or the physical sciences. A lower second-class degree may be considered if accompanied by a relevant master’s degree. English language requirements must be met by the start date if English is not the applicant’s first language.

Applications open on 9 September 2026 and close at 5:00 pm on 21 October 2026. Shortlisting is expected from 22 December 2026, interviews are scheduled for 26–27 January 2027, and the studentship starts on 1 October 2027.

What's required

Applicants must have obtained, or be about to obtain, a first or upper second-class UK honours degree, or an equivalent qualification gained outside the UK, in an appropriate area of medical sciences, computing, mathematics or the physical sciences. A lower second-class degree is only considered if accompanied by a master’s degree (at the University of Bath this must be at least a Merit). Academic qualifications are considered alongside significant relevant non-academic experience. If English is not the first language, applicants must meet the host university’s English language requirements by the start date.
