About this position

PhD opportunity at Griffith University in Thermal Comfort and Energy Behaviour in Net Zero Housing, based at the School of Engineering and Built Environment in Gold Coast, Australia.

This project investigates how net-zero (off-grid) homes in regional Australia perform as living environments, with a focus on thermal comfort, household energy behaviour, and climate resilience. The research will use field monitoring in homes equipped with solar PV and battery systems, combining indoor temperature and humidity sensing, energy-use monitoring, battery data, and smartphone-based occupant comfort surveys.

The successful candidate will examine how residents use heating and cooling systems, manage limited energy availability, and adapt their behaviour to maintain comfort. The project is interdisciplinary and especially relevant to students interested in building performance, sustainable housing, indoor environmental quality, energy behaviour, climate adaptation, and applied field research with community impact.

This is a competition-funded PhD project open to students worldwide. To be competitive for the scholarship, applicants should have a master's degree, a high GPA, and at least two peer-reviewed publications.

Supervisors listed on the post are Dr Fan Zhang and Dr Peyman Akhgar.

Interested applicants should register their interest via the FindAPhD listing; the university will respond directly.
