About this position
PhD opportunity at Cranfield University in the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science on development and optimisation of ultra-efficient and power-dense ice protection systems for future aircraft systems.
This project sits at the intersection of aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, computational physics, artificial intelligence, and machine learning. The research focuses on electrothermal ice protection systems (ETIPS) for wings, rotors, engine inlets, and other critical aircraft surfaces. The aim is to develop novel AI/ML-driven optimisation methods for de-ice ETIPS, combining agent-based techniques, neural networks, gradient-based optimisation, high-fidelity multiphysics simulation, surrogate modelling, and multi-objective optimisation.
The project is linked to industrial partner AeroTex UK LLP, a UK SME specialising in aircraft icing science and engineering. The student will work with experienced researchers in multiscale, experimental, and numerical icing simulations, aerodynamics, systems design, and optimisation, and will gain access to specialist icing codes and training from the sponsor.
Funding: EPSRC and Cranfield University sponsorship provides a bursary of up to £25,183 tax free plus fees for four years. The studentship is open to Home and Overseas fee status students, subject to eligibility rules.
Eligibility: Applicants should have a first or second class UK honours degree or equivalent in a related discipline. Aerospace or mechanical engineering backgrounds are especially suitable. Experience in icing science, CFD, aircraft or mechanical system design, code development, aerothermal engineering, computational modelling, and optimisation methods would be advantageous.
