About this position
PhD Studentship at The University of Manchester in Calibration Methodologies for Industrial/Geophysics Granular Materials.
This fully funded PhD project sits at the intersection of mathematics, physics, computer science, mechanical engineering, earth science, and materials science. The research addresses the calibration problem in particulate continuum models and particle simulations, with a focus on developing robust methods for selecting and parameterising contact models for granular materials.
The project will explore indirect/bulk calibration methods using characterisation machines and experimental data, and will integrate AI-driven approaches such as machine learning, Bayesian optimisation, reinforcement learning, deep learning, surrogate modelling, and uncertainty quantification. The aim is to improve calibration strategies for diverse industrial and geophysical materials and identify the best AI-informed approach for discrete particle models.
Funding: 3.5 years, fully funded. The successful candidate receives an annual tax-free stipend at the UKRI rate (£21,805 for 2026/27) and tuition fees are covered.
Eligibility: Home/UK students only. Applicants should have, or expect to achieve, at least a 2.1 honours degree or a master’s (or international equivalent) in a relevant science or engineering discipline.
Deadline: 13 October 2026. The advert notes that applications may be reviewed early and the listing may be removed before the deadline.
How to apply: Email Dr Anthony Thornton at [email protected]. Include your current level of study, academic background, relevant experience, and a paragraph explaining your motivation for the project.
