About this position

University of Southampton postgraduate research project: Ultra-low-loss SiN platform for quantum, nonlinear and precision photonics.

This is a PhD opportunity in the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences, focused on silicon nitride photonics, quantum photonics, nonlinear optics, precision sensing, and integrated photonics. The project aims to understand and reduce optical loss by linking material properties, waveguide geometry, fabrication conditions, and device design to propagation loss and resonator performance.

Research activities include optical modelling, fabrication studies, and experimental characterisation to separate the effects of sidewall roughness, material absorption, and geometry. The work will support reproducible high-Q resonators, delay lines, filters, and a process design kit (PDK) library for low-loss photonic building blocks, with a target of more than 1 million Q-factor for selected resonators.

Students will receive training in Ansys Lumerical, COMSOL Multiphysics, and Zemax, plus full cleanroom training at the University of Southampton. Additional hands-on training covers optical measurements, silicon photonic chip testing, optical alignment, fibre-to-chip coupling, and device characterisation.

Funding: competition funded. Entry requirement: 2:1 honours degree. Deadline: 2 February 2027.

The project is based at the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom.

Funding details
