About this position

PhD opportunity at the University of Southampton in Unifying distributional and distribution-free uncertainty quantification for trustworthy medical decisions.

This project sits at the intersection of machine learning, uncertainty quantification, statistics, and medical science. The research aims to combine distributional approaches (such as hierarchical models) with distribution-free approaches (such as conformal prediction) to better understand and control uncertainty in high-stakes clinical decision-making.

You will work on theory and method development, including: understanding sources of uncertainty in machine learning; combining hierarchical uncertainty models with conformal guarantees; deriving guarantees for patients from seen and unseen hospitals; and designing decision rules that can defer to clinicians with provable error control.

Application areas include glaucoma screening from retinal images and multiple sclerosis progression from brain MRI. The project is described as primarily fundamental research, with clinical validation supported by collaborators at University Hospital Southampton.

The project is a joint venture between the Vision, Learning and Control group and the Digital Health and Biomedical Engineering group in the School of Electronics and Computer Science. Students will have access to the University’s Iridis supercomputer and a machine learning/digital health research community.

Funding: competition funded.

Entry requirements: a 2:1 honours degree is required.

Deadline: 31 January 2027.

Funding details

Competition funded PhD project.

What's required

Applicants should have a 2:1 honours degree. The project is suited to candidates with strong interest in machine learning theory, uncertainty quantification, and medical decision-making. The work involves developing new methods, proving guarantees, and applying them to retinal images and brain MRI.

How to apply
