The University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover offers a structured PhD programme in Veterinary Biomedicine, designed for students with backgrounds in veterinary medicine, medicine, dental medicine, biology, biochemistry, chemistry, or related biosciences. The programme is conducted entirely in English and spans six semesters, with a flexible start in either the winter or summer semester. Tuition fees are waived, and students pay a semester contribution of about 390 EUR, which includes public transportation within Germany.

The curriculum is divided into four main components: experimental research, interdisciplinary coursework with a research emphasis, specialised coursework, and presentations. The PhD Commission, in consultation with participating departments and clinics, determines the curriculum, while individual supervisors and students tailor specialised coursework. Courses are delivered by university faculty and visiting scientists, and credit can be earned for relevant courses at other institutions or as part of a DFG Research Training Programme.

Key qualifications developed during the programme include statistics, epidemiology, animal welfare, biological safety, and presentation techniques. Students are expected to work independently, participate in seminars, and engage in doctoral colloquia. Performance is regularly evaluated, and students present their research progress through poster presentations and lectures. The programme culminates in a public thesis defense.

International elements are integral, with training in intercultural skills, projects with partners in Germany and abroad, and optional study abroad units. Financial support may be available for visits to partner laboratories abroad. About one third of doctoral candidates are international students, contributing to a diverse academic environment. While German language courses are not integrated, English language courses are provided to support students.

Applicants must demonstrate outstanding academic achievement and provide proof of university-level English proficiency. Fluency in German is advantageous but not required. The supervisor-student ratio is three supervisors per PhD student, ensuring structured research training and support.
