About this position
PhD studentship at Cranfield University on weather-driven fungal attachment, recovery and redistribution across terrestrial surfaces.
This interdisciplinary project sits at the intersection of biology, environmental science, materials science, earth science, and quantitative modelling. It will investigate how rainfall, airflow, simulated sunlight, and drying-rewetting cycles affect fungal attachment, survival, regrowth, release, and redistribution across model and natural surfaces.
You will work with a model filamentous fungus, comparing wild-type and mutant strains on surfaces with different roughness and wettability. Experiments will examine how the order, spacing, intensity, and combination of weather events influence fungal persistence and dispersal. Transported material in air and rainwater will be analysed to determine whether spores, fragments, and colonised particles remain viable and can establish on new surfaces.
The project is based at Cranfield University and draws on expertise from the Magan Centre of Applied Mycology, the Ocean Systems Test Laboratory, City St George’s, University of London, and Utrecht University. It is part of the CENTA3 doctoral training programme supported by NERC.
Funding includes a tax-free stipend at the UKRI rate (up to £21,805) and Home-rate tuition fees for 3.5 years. The studentship is open to Home and international applicants, but international students must cover the fee difference themselves; no international fee waiver is available.
Entry requirements: a first or second class UK honours degree or equivalent in a related discipline. Helpful backgrounds include biological sciences, microbiology, environmental science, ecology, materials science, mechanical engineering, or related fields. Prior experience with fungi, environmental testing, or modelling is not required.
To apply, complete the online Cranfield application and upload the mandatory CENTA Studentship Application Form 2027 plus your CV and all required documents. Applications without the CENTA form will not be considered.
Start date: 27 Sep 2027. Deadline shown on the page: 6 Jan 2027.
