About this position

This PhD position at Ecole Centrale de Nantes, within the Department of Civil Engineering, offers an exciting opportunity to advance research on the modeling of hydro-chemo-mechanical phenomena in CO2 geological sequestration. The project is part of the LOCCO initiative, funded by the French National Research Agency (ANR), and aims to deepen our understanding of the interactions between injected CO2 and geological formations, particularly focusing on the integrity and long-term security of caprock barriers in storage reservoirs.

CO2 capture and storage (CCS) is a critical technology for climate change mitigation, as highlighted by the IPCC. However, the deployment of CCS is currently insufficient to meet global climate targets. This research will address key scientific challenges by developing and numerically implementing a coupled poro-hydro-chemo-mechanical model. The model will simulate the complex interactions between supercritical CO2, brine, and caprock, including scenarios involving mineral dissolution, precipitation, and changes in mechanical properties. The work will utilize the LAGAMINE Finite Element code and involve tasks such as modeling two-phase visco-capillary flow, updating chemo-mechanical subroutines, and simulating laboratory-scale test cases.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in continuum and computational mechanics, with advanced programming skills (Python, Matlab, possibly FORTRAN). The project offers a unique opportunity to collaborate with experimental researchers and contribute to the development of practical tools for assessing the safety and effectiveness of geological CO2 storage.
