About this position

This PhD opening is embedded in the ERC Starting Grant project SEMPATHY, which investigates novel modelling approaches for global and sustainable metal cycles. The successful candidate will identify core parameters affecting yields, build and evaluate process simulations, derive equations for composition-dependent yields, and collaborate closely with the SEMPATHY project team. The work also involves publishing scientific articles, presenting at conferences in English, and writing project reports.
Eligibility highlights: a very good Master’s degree in metallurgy, process engineering, chemical engineering, materials science and engineering, chemistry, or a related field; English at C1 level; and ideally experience with process simulation, thermodynamic modelling, HSC Chemistry, FactSage, Aspen Plus, mass and energy balances, and Python programming.
Funding: temporary project-funded position, TV-L E13 at 75% FTE, with travel budget and open access support. The position starts as soon as possible and no later than 1 January 2027.

What's required

English language skills at least C1 are required. Preferred qualifications include specialization in metallurgy, recycling, process technology, circular economy, or a comparable area; experience with process simulation, thermodynamic modelling, or software such as HSC Chemistry, FactSage, or Aspen Plus; knowledge of mass and energy balances of metallurgical and recycling process chains; programming experience with Python or a comparable language; and the ability to work independently with rigorous scientific, systematic, analytic, creative, and team-oriented skills.
