About this position
PhD Position – Electrocatalytic NOx-to-Ammonia Conversion at Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH, Institute of Energy Technologies – Fundamentals of Electrochemistry (IET-1), Germany.
This PhD project focuses on the experimental development and fundamental understanding of an integrated electrochemical system for the energy-efficient and selective conversion of NOx to NH3. The work combines chemistry, electrochemistry, electrocatalysis, and materials science, with tasks ranging from catalyst synthesis and characterization to half-cell and full-cell electrochemical studies.
Research topics include optimization of electrode potential, current density, electrolyte composition, mass transport, membrane properties, operating conditions, and reactant availability. The successful candidate will contribute to NOx reduction catalyst development, evaluate activity/selectivity/stability, present results at international conferences, and publish in scientific journals.
Applicants should hold, or be close to completing, a master's degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, electrochemistry, materials science, or a closely related field. A background in electrochemistry, electrocatalysis, or experimental chemical research is desirable. Very good English (minimum B2 CEFR) is required.
The position is fully promoted/funded, fixed term for 3 years, and classified at TVöD Bund E13 (75%) with year-end bonus and capital-forming benefits. The project also includes research stays at ETH Zurich for catalyst synthesis work.
