About this position
PhD opportunities in Physics, Earth & Climate Sciences, and Astrophysics at the University of Otago (Dunedin, New Zealand). The Department of Physics invites applications for its 2027 PhD programme from motivated students interested in research-led training in the physical sciences.
Research areas include ultracold quantum gases and quantum many-body physics, quantum optics, photonics and solid-state quantum devices, active and complex matter, statistical and computational physics for complex data, astrophysical and space plasmas, space weather and technological impacts, magnetic confinement fusion energy, Antarctic atmosphere and upper-atmosphere physics, and sea ice/ocean–ice interactions with Southern Hemisphere climate dynamics.
Students will work closely with academic staff in small collaborative groups and have access to high-performance computing, laboratory facilities, and national and international collaborations. The department emphasizes a supportive, collegial environment with seminars, group meetings, and conference opportunities.
Eligibility: applicants should have, or expect to complete before starting, a Master’s degree or equivalent 4-year honours degree in physics or a closely related field such as applied mathematics, engineering physics, geophysics, or astronomy/astrophysics. A strong academic record and clear motivation for independent research are expected. International applicants are welcome.
Funding: successful candidates will be nominated for department-level or University of Otago PhD scholarships covering university fees and providing a stipend for the 3-year PhD. Top candidates may also be considered for the departmental Beverly PhD Prize, which adds further stipend support.
Application: prepare a combined PDF with a one-page statement of interest, a CV (max three pages), and transcripts with grading-scale explanation. Submit via the application form on the departmental website. Deadline: 18 September 2026.
