About this position

TU Delft is advertising a 2-year postdoctoral researcher position on monitoring thermally induced seismic events in the context of geothermal energy extraction. The project focuses on understanding when reservoir cooling in sedimentary geothermal projects can lead to significant seismic activity, combining laboratory experiments, geophysical field monitoring, and numerical reservoir modelling.

The postdoc will work on centroid-moment tensor inversions for small induced events, first in the Groningen area and then for low-magnitude events in geothermal projects. A key goal is to develop an inversion strategy suited to sparse seismic data and to link the volumetric component of the moment tensor to geothermal-induction theory. The role is embedded in the TU Delft Geothermal Theme and includes collaboration with KNMI in De Bilt, Netherlands, as well as two other postdoctoral researchers working on thermo-mechanics and reservoir modelling.

Eligibility: applicants need a PhD in Geophysics, Physics, Mathematics, Earth Sciences, or a closely related field. Strong modelling-to-data skills, understanding of seismic wave fields, independent working ability, teamwork, and excellent English writing/speaking skills are required. Experience with seismic processing and inversion, finite-difference wave-equation solvers such as SeisSol or SPECFEM3D, and interest in geothermal energy are desirable.

Funding and conditions: the position is funded by NWO, lasts 2 years, and is offered under the Dutch Universities collective labour agreement. The appointment is for 32–40 hours per week and includes standard TU Delft employment benefits.
