About this position
PhD opportunity at the University of Waikato, Hamilton campus, New Zealand. The project is titled A Data-Driven Framework for Modeling Post-Cyclone Residential Roofing Recovery in New Zealand and focuses on civil engineering, structural engineering, architecture, mechanical engineering, and related disciplines.
The research investigates how residential roofing systems recover after cyclonic and extreme wind events in New Zealand. It combines empirical damage and recovery observations with probabilistic modeling and machine learning to estimate recovery timelines and identify factors that influence repair, replacement, and reconstruction decisions. The study considers roofing component profiles, damage severity, wind intensity, socioeconomic conditions, insurance processes, and regional recovery capacity.
At the building level, the project will model uncertainty in recovery durations and post-event decision pathways. At the community level, it will develop predictive models of recovery trajectories and assess how roofing vulnerability affects housing restoration. The broader aim is to support evidence-based strategies for improving roofing resilience and informing future building and recovery policy in cyclone-prone regions.
This is a PhD opening only. The opportunity is currently without University funding and is intended for applicants eligible or intending to apply through the Omani Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation scholarship pathway. Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in a relevant field and have strong analytical skills. They must also be eligible to enrol in a PhD programme at the University of Waikato.
To apply, interested candidates should email the supervisor with a CV, academic transcripts, and a brief research statement. Shortlisted applicants will be invited to an online discussion, and suitable candidates will then be asked to formally apply for PhD admission. Closing date: 19 Sep 2026.
