About this position
TU Delft is advertising a Postdoc in Safety Assessment and Strengthening Technology of Existing Concrete Bridges within the Concrete Structures section of the Department of Engineering Structures, Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences.
The project focuses on the large stock of existing concrete bridges in the Netherlands, many of which were built in the 1960s and 1970s and now face increased traffic loads, evolving standards, and natural degradation. The research aims to support sustainable, cost-efficient alternatives to demolition and replacement by improving assessment procedures and identifying effective strengthening solutions.
Research tasks include aligning the next-generation Eurocode framework with Dutch safety assessment practice, refining Rijkswaterstaat guidelines (RBK), reviewing strengthening technologies for concrete bridges, consulting stakeholders such as asset owners, contractors, researchers, and technology developers, and organizing international workshops with experts in strengthening technology.
The role is embedded in a strong applied research environment at TU Delft, with close collaboration with Rijkswaterstaat and TNO. The department emphasizes resilient, smart, and sustainable infrastructure, and offers access to the Macro Mechanics Laboratory and a broad international research network.
Eligibility highlights: a Ph.D. in Concrete Structures, Civil Engineering, or a closely related field; strong background and interest in assessment of existing concrete structures, structural strengthening, or advanced modeling/design of concrete structures; excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Employment details: 1.5-year temporary contract, 32–40 hours per week, salary €3706–€5760, and standard TU Delft benefits. The post is physically located in the Netherlands.
Application deadline: 25 August 2026. Applicants must apply online and upload a CV, motivation letter with a proposal, MSc and PhD degree documents, a 300-word thesis abstract, publication list, two selected publications, and proof of English proficiency (TOEFL, IELTS, or Cambridge).
