About this position

PhD opportunity in programmable DNA nanotechnology for the selective recovery of critical and rare elements at The University of Edinburgh.

The project is jointly supervised by Davide Michieletto and Jason Love and explores how DNA nanostructures could enable more selective, reusable, and sustainable recovery of rare-earth elements and other rare and precious metals. These elements are important for electronics, permanent magnets, and low-carbon technologies, but their clean separation and recycling from waste streams remains a major challenge.

The research will combine computational design of molecular nanostructures with experimental characterisation of recovery efficiency and selectivity from defined mixtures and waste-derived leachates. The post sits at the intersection of DNA nanotechnology, materials science, chemistry, and environmental sustainability.

No prior experience in computational/synthetic chemistry or DNA nanotechnology is required, although it is considered an advantage. Interested candidates are encouraged to contact the poster before applying.

Application deadline: Wednesday 2 December 2026.
