About this position

The Surface Processes Lab Group at the University of New Mexico is seeking a PhD student research assistant to study the drivers of soil carbon persistence in dryland floodplains. The project examines how flooding, groundwater dynamics, and soil development influence whether dryland floodplains act as carbon sources or sinks over decadal to millennial timescales.

This is a full-time, research-focused position based in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and relocation is required. The work will involve substantial field and laboratory data collection and analyses, including monthly field campaigns at Rio Grande floodplain study sites, soil processing, and lab analyses. The student will also contribute to K-12 educational outreach and undergraduate teaching, making this a strong fit for applicants interested in both research and science communication.

The student will be advised by Dr. Marisa Repasch (Assistant Professor of Earth Surface Processes), with opportunities to collaborate on a second research project with other faculty. Preferred applicants should have prior research and field experience and be prepared to write a statement of interest, CV, and writing sample in their own words.

To apply, email [email protected] with a three-paragraph statement of interest describing your research and field experience, why UNM and this project fit your goals, and related topics you would like to pursue, plus a CV and writing sample. No application deadline is stated in the post.
