About this position
PhD project at the University of Basel in the Quantum Coherence Lab and the Swiss Nanoscience Institute exploring how circuit quantum electrodynamics (cQED) can be used to probe strongly interacting electronic phases in atomically thin nanoelectronic devices.
The project is centered on layered two-dimensional materials, including graphene-based and twisted semiconductor systems such as transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs). By combining atomically thin layers at controlled twist angles, the work aims to study moiré superlattices and emergent phases driven by electron-electron interactions, including superconductivity, ferromagnetism, Mott insulating behavior, and related quantum states.
Rather than relying only on optical spectroscopy or standard low-frequency transport, the project uses high-impedance superconducting resonators in the GHz regime to access properties such as quantum capacitance and kinetic inductance, and to search for more exotic interaction effects in strongly correlated systems. A key goal is to reach the strong-coupling regime where electronic and photonic states hybridize, with follow-up characterization through transport and pump-probe experiments adapted from qubit physics.
The PhD will offer hands-on experience in modern nanofabrication, cutting-edge materials research, quantum technology methods, and collaborative experimental physics. The successful candidate will join very active research groups and the SNI PhD school, which provides a broad interdisciplinary environment across quantum physics, chemistry, materials science, nanotechnology, and related areas.
Eligibility: a Master’s degree in Physics, Nanoscience, or a related field is required. Experience with radio-frequency experiments, superconductivity, layered materials, and/or Python programming is advantageous. Strong motivation, curiosity, and the ability to pursue a challenging 4-year project are emphasized. English proficiency is required.
