About this position

This PhD position at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) focuses on the development of a low-voltage multi-beam Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) for high-throughput imaging, with integrated cathodoluminescence (CL) detection to enable large-area imaging of biological samples. The project is a collaboration between TU Delft, industrial partner Delmic, and academic partner AMOLF, and is hosted within the Microscopy Instrumentation and Technique (MInT) group in the Department of Imaging Physics. The research program spans four years and is structured in three main phases: (1) development and optimization of physical and numerical models for the electron optics of the probe-forming column, including multi-beam generation, imaging lenses, scanning systems, and signal detection; (2) design and fabrication of electron-optical components using MEMS technology, precision machining, or a combination thereof; and (3) testing and validation of the prototype, refining both experimental and simulated results.

The candidate will use commercial simulation tools (EOD, GPT) and custom Python scripts, with access to the DelftBlue supercomputer for intensive modeling. The role includes publishing in scientific journals, presenting at international conferences, and contributing to the supervision of BSc and MSc students. The MInT group offers a multidisciplinary environment specializing in electron and ion optics, MEMS, signal detection, and computational imaging, with a strong emphasis on collaboration and knowledge exchange. Extensive hands-on training and advanced courses in electron optics, MEMS, SEMs, and detection systems are provided, along with personalized coaching for career development.

The position offers a 4-year employment contract (split into two phases), a competitive salary (€3059–€3881/month), holiday and end-of-year bonuses, health insurance discounts, and flexible work arrangements. Applicants must have an MSc in Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, with skills in numerical modeling, simulation, and data analysis, and a solid understanding of physics, optics, and microscopy. English proficiency is required, and candidates should be enthusiastic about coaching students and presenting research. TU Delft supports international relocation and offers resources for settling in the Netherlands.

Applications must be submitted online by 30 November 2025, including a motivation letter, CV, and degree transcripts. For further information, contact Dr.

Ali Gheidari.
