About this position

The University of the Balearic Islands offers a PhD position focused on the evolution and functional diversification of Rubisco, the CO₂-fixing enzyme, in extremophile photosynthetic organisms. This research aims to uncover how environmental extremes such as temperature stress, water limitation, salinity, and CO₂ availability have influenced Rubisco performance across evolutionary lineages. The project integrates plant and microbial ecophysiology, enzymology, and evolutionary biology to understand the adaptation mechanisms of photosynthetic organisms in extreme environments.

The successful candidate will join the Plant Ecophysiology Research Group at the University of the Balearic Islands, based at the Institute for Agro-Environmental and Water Economy Research (INAGEA) in Palma de Mallorca. The research environment is interdisciplinary, combining expertise in plant physiology, environmental sciences, and evolutionary biology. The project is not funded by the EU Research Framework Programme and does not relate to a staff position within a research infrastructure.

Applicants should have a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Plant Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Biotechnology, or related fields. A strong interest in photosynthesis, enzyme evolution, and ecophysiology is essential, along with good analytical skills, motivation for research, and proficiency in English. Previous experience in enzymology, physiology, evolutionary biology, or bioinformatics is advantageous but not required.

To apply, candidates should send a motivation letter (1–2 pages), CV, and academic transcripts (Bachelor and Master) in PDF format to [email protected]. The application deadline is 30 September 2026. For further information, candidates may contact the supervisor or visit the university website.

This opportunity is ideal for students interested in plant biology, environmental adaptation, and evolutionary research, offering a chance to contribute to understanding how photosynthetic organisms thrive in extreme conditions.

Funding details

Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.
