About this position
This postdoctoral position at the University of the Balearic Islands focuses on the evolutional and functional diversity of Rubisco in extremophile photosynthetic organisms. Rubisco is a central enzyme for biological CO₂ fixation, and its functional diversity across organisms in extreme environments remains largely unexplored. The project aims to understand how environmental pressures have shaped the diversification of Rubisco kinetic properties across evolutionary lineages, using physiological, biochemical, and evolutionary approaches.
The successful candidate will join the Plant Ecophysiology Research Group, based at the Institute for Agro-Environmental and Water Economy Research (INAGEA) in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. The postdoctoral researcher will lead comparative analyses of Rubisco diversity, integrate physiological, biochemical, and genomic datasets, develop evolutionary analyses of Rubisco sequence diversity, and contribute to experimental approaches for Rubisco characterization. Additionally, the postdoc will participate in mentoring PhD and MSc students within the project.
Responsibilities include taking a leading role in scientific publications, contributing to international collaborations, supporting grant writing and project development, and disseminating results at international conferences. The position offers a collaborative and international research environment, with opportunities to advance the comparative and integrative components of the project.
Applicants must have a PhD in Plant Biology, Microbial Ecology, Biochemistry, Evolutionary Biology, or related disciplines. Experience in photosynthesis or Rubisco biology, enzyme kinetics, evolutionary biology, comparative genomics, or bioinformatics is required. A strong publication record, ability to work independently and collaboratively, and proficiency in English are essential.
