About this position

PhD opportunity in hybrid spin qubit–nanomechanical interaction at the Néel Institute in Grenoble, within the Quantum Hybrid Nano-Optomechanics Group and the QuanG2 doctoral programme coordinated by Université Grenoble Alpes.

The project sits at the interface of quantum physics, nanomechanics, and optomechanics. It investigates hybrid quantum systems based on silicon carbide nanowires coupled to the electronic spin of an NV center in diamond. Building on proof-of-principle experiments, the main goal is to study the reverse coupling: mechanically detecting the force generated by a single spin and transferring qubit-state information onto the position of a mechanical oscillator. The project aims at a macroscopic analogue of the Stern-Gerlach experiment and targets extremely high force sensitivity at the attonewton scale.

Experimental work may involve optics, nanomechanics, vacuum technology, microwave design, and advanced interfacing. A theoretical background in quantum mechanics, optics, and/or nanomechanics is welcome, along with Python programming experience. The topic is especially relevant for students interested in quantum sensing, hybrid quantum systems, spin-mechanics coupling, and nanoscale force measurements.

The position is a full-time PhD and is fully funded for three years under Horizon Europe COFUND. The call states that applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent by the deadline, must not already hold a doctoral degree, and must satisfy the MSCA mobility rule for France. There are no nationality or age restrictions.

Applicants must comply with the MSCA mobility rule: they must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in France for more than 12 months during the 36 months immediately preceding the deadline. Applicants must not be current employees of the host laboratory. A theoretical background in quantum mechanics, optics and/or nanomechanics is welcome, as is prior programming knowledge in Python. The position involves experimental work in optics, nanomechanics, vacuum technology, microwave design, and advanced interfacing.
