About this position

PhD position in Accountable and Responsible AI at the University of Amsterdam, Faculty of Science, within the Complex Cyber Infrastructure research group and the Informatics Institute.

This fully funded four-year PhD project sits at the intersection of Computer Science, Law, Economics, and applied AI for the creative industry and legal-tech workflows. The research focuses on making GenAI inference and reasoning more transparent and traceable, designing AI systems that support EU AI Act compliance-by-design, and integrating structured domain knowledge to reduce hallucinations and improve trustworthy decision-making for non-expert users.

The post is embedded in a research team working on two related initiatives: SafeGenAI, aimed at safe use of GenAI tools in the creative industry, and LLM4LM, a consortium addressing legal-tech challenges in cross-organisational multi-domain agentic solutions. The successful candidate will collaborate with the supervision team, other PhD students, and postdocs, and will contribute to research transfer into creative-industry and legal-practice settings.

Eligibility: MSc in CS, AI, or a closely related field; strong interest in finance and financial services is a plus; ability to read papers, solve complex problems, think creatively, evaluate and reflect, and present findings in writing and orally; strong analytical skills for both abstract models and concrete implementations; teamwork and independent work; fluent English.

Funding and conditions: salary €3,204–€4,051 gross per month (38 hours/week), plus holiday allowance and year-end bonus. The initial contract is 18 months and may be extended to 4 years after satisfactory evaluation. Teaching assistance for undergraduate and master's students is expected.

Application deadline: 15 November 2026. Apply online via the vacancy page and include a CV, motivation letter, publication list, and two referees’ names and email addresses in the required PDF materials.
