About this position
Ghent University / IDLab is advertising a PhD position in AI-driven resilient RAN optimization for 6G and O-RAN architectures in Belgium.
The project sits in the IDLab research cluster on Intelligent Wireless Networking and focuses on next-generation cellular communications, including 6G, Open RAN (O-RAN), radio access network (RAN) optimization, radio resource management (RRM), reinforcement learning, agentic AI, wireless security, network resilience, and multi-RAT coordination across terrestrial/non-terrestrial networks and Wi-Fi.
The research aims to develop decentralized, proactive, and self-healing control strategies for adaptive spectrum usage, power control, scheduling, interference mitigation, jamming avoidance, and service continuity under adversarial or disrupted conditions. Validation will use simulation tools and in-house wireless testbeds.
Applicants should have or soon obtain a Master’s degree in Computer Science Engineering, Information Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering, or a related field. Strong wireless/mobile networking knowledge, machine learning experience, coding skills in Python and C++, familiarity with ns-3 or similar tools, and fluent English (C1) are expected.
The position is a full-time doctoral fellowship for 12 months initially, extendable up to 48 months after positive evaluation. The fellowship is paid at 100% of the net salary of an AAP member in equal family circumstances, with tax advantages under doctoral fellowship regulations.

What's required
Applicants must have or soon receive a Master’s degree in Computer Science Engineering, Information Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering, or a related field. They should be interested in a 4-year PhD in an academic environment and have a strong background in wireless and mobile networks plus machine learning, ideally with reinforcement learning or decision-making agents. Experience or interest in network resilience, robust optimization, or wireless security is expected, along with excellent Python and C++ coding skills, familiarity with ns-3 or similar wireless simulation/prototyping tools, strong analytical and mathematical skills, teamwork, communication skills, ability to meet project milestones, and fluent English at C1 level.
