About this position

Ghent University, a top-ranked institution in Belgium, is offering a full-time PhD position in the Department of Information Technology, specifically within the IDLab research group. The research will focus on AI-driven resilient Radio Access Network (RAN) optimization for 6G and O-RAN architectures. The IDLab group is renowned for its work in connectivity, data science, and artificial intelligence, and collaborates with leading universities, research centers, and industry partners worldwide. The research cluster on Intelligent Wireless Networking (IWINE) provides a unique infrastructure for advanced wireless research.

This doctoral project aims to develop and validate intelligent radio resource management (RRM) mechanisms to ensure resilient connectivity in next-generation cellular networks. The main focus is on Open-RAN (O-RAN) frameworks and 6G, addressing challenges such as adversarial disruptions, jamming, interference, infrastructure failures, and spectrum scarcity. The candidate will explore agentic AI and reinforcement learning-based control for adaptive spectrum usage, power control, scheduling, and multi-RAT coordination, integrating terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks (including satellite and Wi-Fi).

Key tasks include studying state-of-the-art techniques in O-RAN wireless networks, designing robust RAN optimization strategies, developing proactive spectrum management and mitigation solutions, and implementing decentralized, self-healing control loops using advanced AI/ML technologies. The candidate will validate these mechanisms through simulation tools and in-house wireless testbeds, contribute to high-quality publications, and assist in educational and mentoring activities within the research group.

Applicants must hold (or soon obtain) a Master’s degree in Computer Science Engineering, Information Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering, or a related field. Essential qualifications include a strong background in wireless and mobile networks, machine learning (especially reinforcement learning), network resilience, robust optimization, and wireless security. Excellent coding skills in Python and C++, familiarity with wireless network simulation tools (such as ns-3), and strong analytical and mathematical abilities are required. Candidates must be fluent in English (C1 CEFR level) and demonstrate teamwork and communication skills.

The position offers a doctoral fellowship for up to 48 months, with net salary determined by family status and seniority, and is tax-free. Ghent University provides a range of staff benefits, including training opportunities, generous holiday leave, bicycle allowance, and eco vouchers. The application deadline is September 30, 2026. Interested candidates should apply online, submitting a motivation letter, CV, reference contacts, diploma copy, and transcripts. For further information, contact Prof. Adnan Shahid, Prof. Ingrid Moerman, Dries Naudts, or Dr. Vasilis Maglogiannis by email.

For more details about the research group and project, visit IDLab and IWINE. Apply directly via the application portal.
