About this position

PhD position in atmospheric chemistry and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in rainwater at the Institute of Environmental Assessment and Water Research (IDAEA-CSIC) in Barcelona, Spain.

The project, COVALLU, will investigate the occurrence and composition of VOCs in rainwater and their implications for ecosystem processes in Mediterranean environments. The selected PhD candidate will work with state-of-the-art instrumentation, including a Proton Transfer Reaction Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometer (PTR-ToF-MS), and will participate in field campaigns, environmental monitoring, analytical method development, chemical analysis of air and rainwater samples, data processing, statistical analysis, and dissemination through publications and conferences.

The position is embedded in the Environmental Geochemistry and Atmospheric Research (EGAR) group and supervised by Dr. Ana Maria Yáñez-Serrano and Dr. Teresa Moreno. The environment is described as highly international and interdisciplinary, with collaboration across atmospheric chemistry, ecology, air quality, exposure science, and environmental modelling.

Eligibility highlights: a master’s degree or equivalent in Environmental Sciences, Chemistry, Atmospheric Sciences, Ecology, Physics, Earth Sciences, Environmental Engineering, or a related field; English proficiency; and desirable experience in laboratory work, environmental monitoring, programming, or data analysis.

What's required

A master's degree or equivalent in Environmental Sciences, Chemistry, Atmospheric Sciences, Ecology, Physics, Earth Sciences, Environmental Engineering, or a related discipline. Experience with laboratory work, environmental monitoring, and/or data analysis is an advantage. Programming and data-analysis skills such as Wavemtrics, R, Python, or similar are desirable. Good written and oral communication skills in English are required, and the candidate should be proactive, enthusiastic, collaborative, and analytically strong.
