About this position
Postdoctoral Researcher in Stable-Isotope Nitrogen Ecology and Orbitrap Isotopologue Analysis at the Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO-KNAW), Wageningen, Netherlands.
This two-year postdoc focuses on stable-isotope tracing, nitrogen cycling, nitrogen ecology, and Orbitrap isotopologue/isotopomer analysis. The project aims to improve mechanistic understanding of how nitrogen moves through ecological systems and how it is transformed, transferred, retained, and lost across terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems.
The successful candidate will design and conduct 15N stable-isotope experiments, develop and validate Orbitrap-based analytical workflows, establish isotope enrichment and natural-abundance correction procedures, and build reproducible pipelines for isotope mass balance and nitrogen-flux analysis. The role spans plant, soil, microbial, and aquatic systems and supports interdisciplinary ecological research across NIOO departments.
Eligibility highlights include a completed PhD in biogeochemistry, ecology, analytical chemistry, or a related field; hands-on experience with 15N tracer experiments; quantitative interpretation of isotope-labelled experiments; knowledge of nitrogen-cycle processes; strong statistical/computational skills; and experience with R and/or Python. Experience with high-resolution mass spectrometry and method development is considered an advantage.
Funding/employment: full-time postdoctoral appointment for 2 years, with a salary indication of €3,706–€5,760 gross per month, plus standard Dutch university/KNAW employment benefits.
Supervisor/contact: Prof. Eiko Kuramae, Senior Scientist, Department of Microbial Ecology, NIOO-KNAW ([email protected]).
Deadline: apply by 7 November 2026. Submit a motivation letter, CV, and at least two references via AcademicTransfer.

What's required
Completed PhD in biogeochemistry, ecology, analytical chemistry or a related discipline; hands-on experience with 15N stable-isotope tracer experiments; experience with experimental design and quantitative interpretation of isotope-labelled experiments; knowledge of nitrogen-cycle processes; experience with isotope enrichment calculations, isotope mass balance and/or quantification of nitrogen fluxes; strong quantitative and statistical skills; experience with computational analysis of isotope or mass-spectrometry datasets, preferably using R and/or Python; ability to work independently and collaboratively in an interdisciplinary environment; good written and spoken English. Experience with high-resolution mass spectrometry, Orbitrap-based analyses, isotopologue/isotopomer analysis, method development, nitrogen biogeochemistry, and reproducible analytical pipelines is a plus.
How to apply
Send a motivation letter and an up-to-date CV including at least two references. Highlight your hands-on stable-isotope experience, quantitative isotope analysis, and/or mass-spectrometry method development, and explain how you would contribute to stable-isotope nitrogen research at NIOO. Apply via the AcademicTransfer application page before the deadline.
