About this position

Leiden University’s Institute for History is advertising a PhD position in the area of Belonging of European Muslims to the EU. The project is part of the NOW Open-L funded research programme European Muslims and Belonging to the EU, 2015–2025, led by Professor Sarah Wolff.

The PhD researcher will contribute primarily to WP2, Agency of Belonging in Europe, and will study how European Muslims act as transnational and bottom-up agents shaping, negotiating, and contesting belonging in European communities and institutions. The project combines EU studies, social movement theory, digital methods, and discourse analysis, with attention to mobilisation, demonstrations, strategic litigation, anti-racism, anti-Islamophobia, freedom of religion or belief, EU foreign policy, and climate change.

Applicants should have an MA or RMES in political science, international relations, European (Union) studies, migration, or sociology, plus strong research and interview skills. Excellent English is required, along with the ability to read and analyse Arabic-language written and digital sources; additional languages such as French, Dutch, Bulgarian, Turkish, or Moroccan Arabic are an advantage. The candidate must live and work from the Netherlands.

The position is full-time, initially for one year and extendable by three years after positive evaluation. Salary is €3,204–€4,051 gross per month, with holiday allowance, end-of-year bonus, training and career development, sabbatical leave, and possible tax benefits for international spouses.

Applications must be submitted in English by 26 October 2026 via the university application system. Required documents include a cover letter, a research proposal (max 1000 words), CV, and MA thesis in PDF format.
