About this position

The University of Vienna is advertising a PhD / predoctoral position in the Faculty of Chemistry with the group of Michael Reithofer at the Department of Inorganic Chemistry.

The project, titled “Carbene stabilized Nano materials and composites”, focuses on the design and development of carbon-stabilized nanomaterials and their integration into composites such as MOFs and COFs. Research topics include nanoparticle synthesis, surface chemistry, materials synthesis and characterization, catalysis, electrocatalysis, photonic materials, and sensing.

The successful candidate will work on structure–property relationships linking ligand design, nanoparticle structure, and functional performance, with a strong emphasis on N-heterocyclic carbenes and related carbene ligands. The work combines synthetic chemistry, nanomaterials processing, and advanced characterization in an interdisciplinary environment spanning inorganic chemistry, materials science, and nanotechnology.

The group offers a well-equipped research setting with access to synthetic and analytical infrastructure, including air-sensitive synthesis tools, microscopy suites, and centralized facilities at the University of Vienna. The position is a paid university employment contract, with a basic salary of EUR 3,776.10 on a full-time basis, plus possible increments for prior experience.

Eligibility highlights: Master’s degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, or a related field; strong background in inorganic/materials chemistry; experience in organic and/or nanoparticle synthesis; materials synthesis and characterization required; MOF/COF synthesis and electrochemistry/CO2RR are advantageous; fluent English required, German helpful.

Application deadline: 2026-10-30. Applicants should submit a scientific CV, letter of intent, summary of research interests, and Master’s degree/diploma via the University of Vienna job portal.
