About this position

University of Twente is advertising a PhD position in CO2 desublimation for cryogenic carbon capture in Enschede, The Netherlands.

The project sits in the Thermal Conversion and Storage group within the Department of Thermal and Fluid Engineering. The research focuses on how CO2 turns directly from gas to solid under cryogenic conditions, with the goal of improving carbon capture technologies for sectors such as power generation, steel, and cement.

This is a strongly experimental PhD with modelling and data analysis support. The successful candidate will design and operate a cryogenic test setup, study solid CO2 layer growth using optical diagnostics such as back-light imaging and Schlieren, and analyse heat and mass transfer near the surface. The work also includes investigating the effects of operating conditions, gas composition, pressure, flow rate, surface temperature, and surface design.

The position involves collaboration with academic and industrial partners, including RWTH Aachen University and Emicap B.V., and offers publication opportunities in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at international conferences.

Eligibility highlights: MSc in Mechanical Engineering, Applied Physics, or a closely related field; strong background in thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer and/or mass transfer; interest in hands-on laboratory research; strong quantitative data analysis skills; and excellent English. Experience with cryogenic systems, phase-change heat transfer, optical diagnostics, Python/MATLAB, COMSOL, or OpenFOAM is an advantage.

Funding and conditions: full-time 4-year PhD appointment under the Dutch CAO for universities, with a gross monthly salary from €3,059 in year 1 to €3,881 in year 4, plus holiday allowance, end-of-year bonus, pension, 29 holidays, and other employee benefits.

Application deadline: 2026-10-25. Apply through the University of Twente vacancy portal and include a CV, motivation letter, transcript or course list, thesis or writing sample, and two references. An English language test may be required for applicants without prior English-medium education.

What's required

Applicants must hold an MSc degree in Mechanical Engineering, Applied Physics, or a closely related field. A strong background in thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer and/or mass transfer is required, along with a clear interest in experimental research and hands-on laboratory work. Candidates should be able to analyse experimental data in a structured and quantitative way, communicate well in an interdisciplinary environment, and have a very good command of written and spoken English. Experience with cryogenic systems, phase-change heat transfer, optical diagnostics (Schlieren, shadowgraphy, high-speed imaging), gas-flow systems, image processing, Python/MATLAB, or COMSOL/OpenFOAM is an advantage. Non-Dutch applicants without prior English-medium secondary and tertiary education need IELTS 6.5, TOEFL iBT 90, or Cambridge CAE-C/CPE.

How to apply

Apply via the University of Twente vacancy portal. Submit a CV, cover letter, transcript or list of BSc and MSc courses and grades, MSc thesis or another scientific writing sample if available, and contact details of two references. For questions, contact Dr. ir. Abhishek Purandare by email.
