About this position
PhD position at the University of Bern in computational chemistry, metabolism modelling, planetary science, and astrobiology within the NCCR Genesis research infrastructure. The project investigates the habitability of two extreme Solar System environments: the cloud layer of Venus and the subsurface ocean/plume environment of Enceladus.
The successful candidate will develop a computational modelling framework that combines planetary environmental chemistry with microbial metabolic networks to estimate how much biomass could be sustained under different conditions and whether biological activity could generate detectable chemical signatures. The work is highly interdisciplinary and connects chemistry, Earth and planetary sciences, physics, biology, and scientific programming.
The project will be carried out at the University of Bern (Space Research and Planetary Sciences) in collaboration with ETH Zurich and researchers including Dr Sean Jordan and Prof. Audrey Vorburger. It contributes to the scientific preparation of future life-detection missions, including ESA's planned L4 mission.
Eligibility: Master's degree completed or near completion in physics, astronomy, planetary science, Earth science, computational science, chemistry, or a related field. Strong quantitative skills and programming experience, preferably in Python, are important. Background in planetary science, atmospheric chemistry, geochemistry, microbiology, or astrobiology is helpful but not mandatory.
Funding: Fully funded PhD position. Salary for 2026 is CHF 50,042 gross per year for full-time employment, including the 13th month salary.
Application: Submit one PDF with a motivation letter, CV, diplomas/transcripts, and two referees. Applications are reviewed from the end of August 2026 until the position is filled. Earliest start date is November 2026.
