About this position
WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF in Davos, Switzerland is recruiting a PhD student for Snow Water Equivalent innovative sensor development (f/m/d). The project sits within the Research Unit Snow and Atmosphere and focuses on snow processes, snow hydrology, cryosphere monitoring, sensor development, field measurements, and data analysis.
The PhD will work on a research project funded by the Swiss National Competence Center Muoniverse and collaborate with the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) to validate and deploy DMAPS muon sensors for measuring Snow Water Equivalent (SWE) in alpine environments. The work includes cross-validating sensor readings against automated and manual snow measurements such as snow scale, snow profiles, and SMP, then deploying multiple sensors to study small-scale SWE variability during mass redistribution and loss events and in heterogeneous terrain.
Applicants should hold a master’s degree in science or engineering. A background in experimental work, data analysis, and field measurements is preferred. Strong Python skills and the ability to handle large datasets are required. Experience with snow hydrology, cryosphere monitoring, or particle physics instrumentation is an advantage. The role also requires independence, problem-solving ability, and readiness to work in alpine conditions, including winter field campaigns. English fluency is required; German is beneficial.
Applications must be submitted via the WSL webpage portal; email applications will not be considered. The post is open until filled / ASAP. For questions, contact Dr. Mathias Bavay at WSL SLF.
