About this position

ETH Zurich is recruiting a fully funded PhD student for the Geomitigation of Greenhouse Gases group in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences.

The project is titled PhD Position in Cryogenic Carbonate Mineralization and Carbon Dioxide Fluxes and sits at the intersection of experimental geochemistry, cryosphere science, planetary surface processes, and carbon cycling. The successful candidate will investigate how freezing affects carbonate mineral formation and carbon dioxide exchange in cryogenic environments such as glaciers, sea ice, permafrost, and ice-rich planetary systems.

Research activities include controlled freezing and thawing experiments, aqueous geochemistry, gas monitoring, mineral characterization, and development of a predictive kinetic framework. The lab work uses analytical tools such as gas analyzers, HPIC, ICP-OES, UV-Vis spectroscopy, and potentiometric titration.

Applicants should hold an MSc in geochemistry, Earth sciences, environmental chemistry, chemistry, or a closely related discipline. The ideal candidate is curious, careful, motivated by experimental research, comfortable with quantitative chemical data, and interested in low-temperature geochemistry, water-rock interactions, carbonate chemistry, and cryosphere-related processes. Strong English skills are required; reactive-transport or geochemical modeling experience is a plus.

The position is fully funded for 4 years with an expected start date of 4 January 2027. ETH Zurich also highlights a collaborative research environment, mentorship, doctoral courses, teaching opportunities, and staff benefits.

Application deadline: 31 August 2026. Apply online only via the ETH Zurich portal and include a cover letter, CV, transcripts, Master Diploma, and contact details for two academic references.
