About this position
PhD position in Data Science at the University of Groningen (Faculty of Science and Engineering), Netherlands.
This PhD project sits at the intersection of data science, digital phenotyping, digital biomarkers, neuroscience, psychology, and clinical research. The successful candidate will investigate digital proxies of Reward, Motivation and Impulsivity (RM&I) and their relationship with neurobiological markers and clinically relevant outcomes. The work is part of an international, interdisciplinary project focused on a transdiagnostic precision-medicine framework across major depressive disorder, Alzheimer’s disease, and obesity.
The research combines three main components: a systematic review of existing digital proxies, development and application of data-driven measures, and hypothesis testing with neurobiological markers. The project emphasizes longitudinal research, biomarker discovery, clinical validation, evidence synthesis, and stakeholder engagement. You will work with longitudinal, multimodal, and potentially multi-omics datasets, and contribute to understanding whether digital measures can complement existing biomarkers and endpoints across different health conditions.
Eligibility highlights: a completed Master’s degree in a relevant field (for example data science, AI, computer science, neuroscience, psychology, biomedical sciences, medicine, epidemiology, or health sciences); experience with statistical analysis and/or data science; programming skills in R and/or Python; strong English; and an interest in digital phenotyping, behavioural data, and scientific literature synthesis. Experience with systematic reviews, longitudinal/cohort analysis, machine learning, neuroimaging, electrophysiology, or reproducible/open science is an advantage.
Funding: full-time PhD appointment for 48 months with salary from €3,204 to €4,051 gross per month, plus holiday allowance and end-of-year bonus. The position is conditional on the grant agreement being signed and funding becoming available.
Deadline: 30 October 2026, 23:59 Dutch local time.
How to apply: submit your application online through the vacancy page. Upload a CV including two references and a cover letter.
