About this position
PhD opportunity at the University of Salzburg in the Department of Environment and Biodiversity, within the DSP doctorate school Dynamic Mountain Environments & SociEty (DynamitE Vol. 2). The project CRAG (Critical Infrastructure Risk from Alpine Geohazards) combines Earth Science, Geology, Civil Engineering, Environmental Science, Geography, and computational methods to study gravitational mass movements near critical infrastructure under changing climate conditions.
The research focuses on 3D numerical stress modeling using the Finite Cell Method (FCM) on HPC clusters, together with field monitoring using InSAR, UAV photogrammetry, laser scanning, and real-time fissurometers. The project also examines climate and meteorological triggers such as permafrost degradation and heavy precipitation to identify failure thresholds in alpine terrain.
This is a fully funded PhD position with an annual gross salary of at least €52,865.40 for a full-time appointment. The contract is temporary for 3 years, with an expected start in October 2026. The position is embedded in a vibrant international research environment and includes access to high-end infrastructure, intensive supervision from the University of Salzburg and the University of Innsbruck, and links to disaster management networks.
Eligibility highlights: a completed diploma or master's degree in Geology, Earth Sciences, Geomorphology, Geotechnics, Civil Engineering, Computational Engineering, or a comparable quantitative discipline; enrollment in the doctoral program at the University of Salzburg; solid knowledge of or strong interest in numerical modeling/geomechanics; programming and GIS experience (e.g., Python, MATLAB); excellent English; and willingness to conduct physically demanding fieldwork in high-alpine terrain.
