About this position

PhD position at the Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO-KNAW) in Wageningen, the Netherlands, on epialleles, epigenetics, DNA methylation, gene expression, and heritable variation in plants.

This genomics-focused project asks how important epigenetic variation is for rapid adaptation in wild plant populations. The work uses an apomictic dandelion lineage as a model system to disentangle genetic and epigenetic effects. You will study a panel of accessions from a geographically widespread lineage to identify heritable differences in gene expression, screen for DNA methylation involvement, and explore environmental effects in the origin of putative epialleles.

The role includes targeted DNA sequencing for methylation, SNP and structural variation analysis, long-read sequencing methods, differential gene expression analysis, bioinformatic and statistical interpretation, greenhouse work for phenotypic analyses, coordination with collaborating groups, and supervision of BSc/MSc students. The project is embedded in the Plant ecological genetics research group of Prof. Koen Verhoeven and interacts closely with Dr. Jason Gardiner at Utrecht University.

Eligibility highlights: an MSc in plant sciences, bioinformatics, plant genomics or a related field; strong bioinformatic/statistical skills; experience with next-generation sequencing, preferably long-read ONT data; interest in epigenetics and adaptation; and strong English (C1 expected). Experience with sequencing-based DNA methylation and/or transposable element analysis is a plus.

Funding/employment: fixed-term PhD contract, initially 12 months and extendable up to 4 years total, with a salary of €3,204–€4,051 gross per month for full-time work plus standard Dutch employment benefits.

Deadline: 2 October 2026. Apply through AcademicTransfer.

What's required

Applicants must have a successfully completed MSc degree in plant sciences, bioinformatics, plant genomics or a related field. Strong data analysis skills are required, including bioinformatic and statistical analysis. Experience with next-generation DNA sequencing, preferably long-read ONT data, is expected; prior sequencing-based DNA methylation and/or transposable element analysis is a plus. Candidates should be interested in epigenetics, adaptation, and linking molecular mechanisms to evolutionary and ecological concepts, be able to work independently and collaboratively, and have the potential to guide and mentor students. Good written and spoken English is required, with C1 level expected and possibly an internationally recognized certificate of proficiency.
