About this position

CERIC-ERIC, the Central European Consortium for Research Infrastructure, invites applications for a PhD position in Experimental Physics as part of the LEMIS project. The project focuses on the analysis and imaging of light elements in materials critical to energy storage, utilizing advanced ion beam analysis (IBA) techniques. The successful candidate will play a key role in upgrading and optimizing the ion microprobe setup at the Ruđer Bošković Institute (RBI) in Zagreb, Croatia, managed by the Laboratory for Ion Beam Interactions within the Experimental Physics Division. Research activities will center on the elemental analysis and imaging of energy storage materials, with particular emphasis on the detection of light elements and monitoring of electrochemical processes.

The position offers the opportunity to work at the accelerator facility of RBI, with additional experimental work conducted at Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste, a partner facility within the CERIC-ERIC consortium. CERIC-ERIC provides open access to some of the most advanced analytical facilities in Europe, supporting research in materials, biomaterials, and nanotechnology. The LEMIS project aims to adopt and improve existing IBA techniques for optimal use in energy storage material analysis, contributing to advancements in both fundamental and applied physics.

Applicants must hold a Master or equivalent degree in physics and be eligible for direct enrollment in PhD studies, with a GPA of at least 80% of the maximum possible. Required skills include experience with experimental physics practices and methodologies, fluent English (minimum B2 level), and knowledge of additional languages is advantageous. Additional qualifications include expertise in Ion Beam Analysis techniques, material analysis, and programming (Python, MATLAB, etc.). Strong affinity for experimental work, independent and creative problem-solving abilities, and effective interpersonal and collaboration skills are highly valued.

The position is full-time and temporary, with a contract duration of 48 months. Benefits include 33 days of holidays per year, flexible working hours, training opportunities, and the possibility to work partially remotely. The application process requires submission of a CV in European Format and a recommendation letter to [email protected] with the subject 'Project LEMIS'. Applications are open until filled. For further information, candidates may contact [email protected], [email protected], or [email protected]. Additional details can be found on the project website.

This PhD position is ideal for candidates passionate about experimental physics, ion beam analysis, and interdisciplinary research in energy storage materials. The LEMIS project offers a stimulating environment with access to cutting-edge facilities and collaboration across leading European research centers.
