About this position
The Steel and Composite Structures Group at the Institute of Structural Engineering (IBK), ETH Zürich, is offering a full-time PhD position focused on the fire behaviour of timber-encased steel composite (TESC) structures. This position is part of a four-year research project funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, with a flexible start date from February 2026. The project is led by Dr Valentino Vigneri, with Prof. Andreas Taras as the principal doctoral supervisor, and includes collaboration with Dr Daniele Forni (SUPSI) and Prof.
Andrea Frangi (Timber Structures Group, ETH Zürich). The research aims to advance the understanding and predictive modelling of steel profiles embedded in timber under accidental loading scenarios such as fire and explosion, which are increasingly important for resilient structural design. The project involves multi-scale experimental campaigns and advanced analyses to characterise the thermal, thermomechanical, and dynamic behaviour of steel, timber, and adhesives, as well as validation of physics-based numerical models. The PhD candidate will design and execute experimental fire tests on TESC members, analyse thermal and mechanical behaviour at elevated temperatures, develop thermomechanical models, and contribute to the overall understanding of TESC performance in fire scenarios.
The position offers access to state-of-the-art experimental and computational facilities, a competitive salary, and opportunities for professional growth through conferences and committee participation. Applicants should have an MSc in civil, structural, or mechanical engineering, strong skills in steel and composite structures, structural fire safety, and advanced modelling (ABAQUS, ANSYS, OpenSees), and excellent English communication skills.
Beneficial skills include timber structure design, experimental testing experience, and knowledge of German or Italian. Applications must be submitted online with a cover letter, CV, transcript, statement of approach, and references.
ETH Zürich is committed to diversity, sustainability, and providing an inclusive, stimulating research environment.
