About this position
PhD opportunity at the University of Basel in the Computational Cellular Dynamics (CCD) Lab led by Marius Lange, based at the Department of Biomedicine and the Basel Research Centre for Child Health (BRCCH). The project focuses on generative modeling of human development and disease, with an emphasis on single-cell genomics, spatial genomics, sequencing, imaging, and computational biology.
The successful candidate will develop models for human developmental and disease biology, with possible directions including: cell-cell communication, joint models of regulation and dynamics, and intervention design and continual learning. The lab builds on prior work such as scVelo, CellRank, CellRank 2, moslin, moscot, and RegVelo, and collaborates with hospital and university partners in Basel to generate new data on modern spatial and single-cell platforms.
This is a fully funded 4-year PhD position (100%) with generous computational and data-generation resources, competitive salary and social benefits, and enrolment in the International PhD Programme in Biomedicine.
Eligibility highlights: MSc in computer science, mathematics, physics, engineering, computational biology, or a related quantitative field; hands-on experience with biological data; strong Python skills; experience with PyTorch or JAX; statistical grounding; fluent English; GitHub account with code. Experience with single-cell or spatial genomics and open-source scientific software is desirable.
Application deadline: 2026-10-16. Apply through the online portal and include a motivation letter, short research-project description, CV, GitHub link, MSc transcript, and contact details for at least two references.
Location: Basel, Switzerland.
